[nocrosspost][/nocrosspost]I decided to take a break from house building. Yesterday I found this wonderful Dickens’ Desk. The desk where Charles Dickens wrote Great Expectations. It was made of mahogany. This desk fetched almost 900 000$ at auction in 2008. I also found different variations of it on several antiques’ sites.

One more, made of oak:

And mahogany:

I was lucky to find the working drawing of this desk at Google Sketchup 3D warehouse, all I had to do was to scale it to the right size, which wasn’t that difficult. After that, I started making a cutting list – most of the detail were supposed to be made of 1,5 mm veneer. It’s a bit harder for me to work with such thickness, especially when you need to make mortise and tenon joints. Making Victorian wardrobe was quite similar task.

At first I thought of changing the thickness, but eventually decided to give it a try. I hope it’ll be okay, though I’m a bit worried because of the mahogany veneer I’m using, I bough it pre-cut, so it’s a bit fragile.

Here are the tenons, I’m making them on my tablesaw, veneer tends to break sometimes.
