Art Nouveau Vitrine. Part two.
I’m almost done with the vitrine. All I need now is install hinges. I tried to make them yesterday, but failed. Besides, I really needed to assemble the whole thing first. It was quite difficult, but I made it.So tomorrow I’ll start with hinges again, maybe I’ll be lucky!
By the way, the top and the bottom of the vitrine are all dry fit, I made it just for installing the hinges and after that I’ll glue everything in place.

Art Nouveau Vitrine
I think this is one og the most challenging projects for me:
On the pic above the original item is on the right, on the left is a marquetry panel I was making (I had to change the layout and design of it later). The vitrine itself is pretty small (the width of the back panel is just 40mm, the thickness of the shelves is 1mm). I really like carved decoration and marquetry, of course. While I was modeling the vitrine I started reading quite an interesting article about Emile Galle, who was one of the most influlential artists in art nouveau movement. He was the one who invited Louis Majorelle to work for him (Majorelle was making brass and bronze furniture decorations, later he started making marquetry and furniture too).
I was disappointed and inspired at the same time while reading about Galle’s company. First of all, he was really good at organizing furniture and ceramics/glass manufacture process, his father was actually running pottery making business. Later Emile started producing furniture, he commissioned marquetry design and carving to the other artists, as well as metalwork. Only later he started making marquetry himself. Anyway, that was my disappointment, somehow I thought that he was producing it all by himself, but it turned out to be a dream team of artists. It’s pretty amazing, of course, but it was a surprise for me:)
Almost everything is ready for assembling the vitrine, I only need to make knife hinges for a door. For now, several photos of the process.
Site update and some other news.
It’s been a while since my last post (besides, I was writing a lot in Russian only and was too lazy to translate the posts – you’d have to switch to Russian version and use Google translate or something to read all of it).
My life moved mostly to Instagram, more and more miniaturists migrate there (thank God, it’s not Vero!), so it seemed fun.
Besides, there were some things I didn’t like on my site, like a Gallery page, now it’s called Portfolio and it’s much more user-friendly now.
I also put the links to all my social media at the top of my site, and the name of the site changed too, by the way!
Anyways, I did a lot of work since Miniature Masterworks, still have a long list of commissions, and I shared a lot of pics on Instagram about it.
But it felt a bit sad to leave my diary as it was, I’ve been writing it since 2009 and there are more than 650 posts in both Russian and English, crazy, right?
So I decided to update a design a bit and start writing again.
I also started translating the old posts into English ( I need to translate about 200 of them! Ugh…)
Among other news – I have lots of commissions, here’s one of the latest – two Gustavian chairs. Very challenging process, but I loved every minute of it and learned a lot! Hope you’ll like it!
Henry O. Studley Workbench
I haven’t posted anything here for a while, and there were some good reasons to it. Somewhere in my previous posts I wrote that I got an invitation to Miniature Masterworks Show in KC. There were also a competition announced, Barbara Marshall award. It wasn’t allowed to show the piece you were making for the award, so my silence can be easily explained now, lol. There was a lot of work, especially two last months were terrible.
So here is the piece I was making, a workbench.
Why Workbench? It was my second one, the first was Roubo workbench that I showed about a year ago, maybe more. I showed it on IGMA forum, and many people liked it, Bill Robertson suggested I should try making Henry O. Studley workbench. For those who haven’t seen his work, he was famous for his toolchest.
Bill wants to make it in miniature, but a bit bigger than 1/12. When I heard his suggestion I thought that it was a bit too much, there weren’t many photos on Google search but it was enough to see:)
But it got into my head, so when I heard about the competition I immediately thought of it. I knew that a lot of artisans would choose something French, Rococo etc (and I was right, hehe). I wanted something different and couldn’t think of anything, but this workbench somehow stuck in my head, so I decided to make it.
From one hand, it wasn’t a good choice, not many people would appreciate it, only those, I think, who work with wood or metal. On the other hand, it was very honest project, something where every artisan’s work begins. So the decision was made.
I bought a book about Studley’s bench to decide on proportions and dimensions.
The process was not comfortable for me, I don’t like metalwork, to be honest, so the whole thing was a challenge and such an out of comfort zone project, that I think there’s no piece I can’t make, lol.
I didn’t take any prize, but heard a lot of nice words about the workbench, and it has found its place in a museum.
I really enjoyed the show, all the staff and visitors were so friendly, I didn’t see such a vibe in Kensington, to be honest.
I’ll be attending Guild School in June,2018. So there’s something to look forward to.

Вот еще один предмет, целая русская коллекция получается у меня для шоу. Стол-бобик, один вариант его я начинала делать, используя маркетри, а вот этот – просто роспись по дереву. Таким он был до финиша

Чуток состарила и кричащий белый ушел, появилась какая-то цельность. В общем, я довольна росписью. Конструкцией не очень, вот думаю, что если повезет, то постараюсь успеть сделать маркетри-версию, с открывающейся крышкой и зеркалом внутри.
Стол геридон
В общем, шерлайн в деле 🙂
У меня лежал чертеж русского стола, который без токарки сделать было нереально. Оригинал был найден в одном каталоге, привезенном из Англии. И вот сейчас пришло время этот столик сделать. Для него понадобятся 12 таких вот розеток с отверстием 1мм, диаметр розеток 8мм. Плюс нужно будет делать травление. В общем, тут много интересностей. С Али заказала заготовки для резцов, все-таки из старых сверел свои делать неудобно.
И! Вдруг кому интересно, есть такой вот форум – http://miniature.mybb.ru/, который мне хотелось бы всячески поддержать, народу там пока не так много, как хотелось, поэтому хочется всех туда пригласить. Форум закрытый, темы доступны только после регистрации. Я с таким решением не очень согласна, но таки не я его создавала, может, так оно и надо, мало ли. Я там пытаюсь теперь вести свою личную тему и поддержать темы по станкам и прочему. В общем, присоединяйтесь!
Токарник Sherline
Вот.
Ну что тут сказать 🙂 Новый слон в моей лавке. Токарник по дереву теперь уедет в шкаф.
Изначально станок думала купить через посредника, рассматривались разные варианты покупки в разных странах (не, ну правда, в Европе и Азии есть множество дилеров). А вот на прошлой неделе оказалось, что в списке официальных представителей есть и Россия. На этих выходных пришлось сгонять на разведку, посмотреть. У представителей есть сайт – http://sherline.su/, где можно посмотреть на цены и понять, что в принципе нет никакой разницы, где брать станок – по моим подсчетам получалось, что цена получается такой же, как если бы я брала его через посредника с доставкой (за нехилые деньги, кстати). А тут можно посмотреть/проверить и не ждать две недели.
В общем, в офисе Шерлайна сейчас можно посмотреть на три станка – два фрезера и один токарник:
И, хотя мне нужен был именно токарник, больше всего я засматривалась на фрезеры. После проксона, все эти клевые шкалы, которые выгравированы, а не наклеены абы как, хороший дизайн, продуманная конструкция – в общем, хотелось схватить и убежать. И, мои личные ощущения, на фото Шерлайн выглядит хуже 🙂 Прям как моя мебель 🙂 В реале станки не выглядят пластмассовыми, как иногда кажется на фото, и вообще дают ощущение качественного инструмента, а не имитации полноразмерного. Удалось посмотреть-потрогать поворотные тиски, приспособу для фрезерования под разными углами, поворотный столик. Все выглядит ну очень хорошо, все это очень хочется, конечно, купить.
Александр, который как раз является дилером, сказал, что в Сокольниках с 6 по 9го марта будет выставка технического антиквариата, там будет стенд, где станки также можно посмотреть.
Мой токарник весит примерно 15 кг, я взяла версию с телом в 17 дюймов, есть еще версия в 8 дюймов, это совсем малыш. Но мне он показался ну уж совсем маленьким. Хотя 17 тоже как-то много. Пока станок удалось собрать (там движок нужно ставить, отрегулировать положение, чтобы ремень не терся). Станок также требует крепления к столешнице, так как движок довольно тяжелый, и токарник может назад опрокинуться.
Я взяла комплектацию Б, есть еще Ц – там есть приспособа для нарезания резьбы, она мне ни к чему. Хотелось еще несколько приспособ, но их не было в наличии.
Еще один момент – официальный дилер они только для самого Шерлайна, в России они пока не проходили сертификацию, так что купили мы его безо всяких гарантийных сроков и прочего, что меня мало смущает, ибо в любом случае, если что-то со станком было бы не так, то его только в США и везти ремонтировать, разницы нет.
У меня на очереди два проекта, где токарник этот был очень нужен, потому все оставалось только на стадии чертежей. В общем, ура! Теперь их можно сделать. И возобновить рубрику металлообработка 😉
