The Balcony.
After playing with mini-lathe, I decided to make a balcony for the second floor:
Oh, and I made some sort of siding for it too. Later I’ll decorate and paint it to make a worn look. Sooo much work to do.
Well, back to good things. I took plywood, several minutes with scroll saw, and my dollhouse will have these… corbels, right. I’ve found this design in Russian carving-something album, something tells me it’s not the last time I’m using it.
It’s far from perfect, I painted it with acrylic, and sandpapered – it looks a bit worn now. I think it should be more realistic.
Now I have to do only balcony railings and the door, and it’ll be done.
lathe
I’m sooo happy. Today I’ve found the great shop near my house, they sell mini hinges and all mini-electro-cool-stuff-lathe-dremel, well, all things I love. So I immediately bought there this cool cutter set

I was going to buy aaaalll hinges they had, but I said to myself: “lathe-first, put your money back, it’s close to your place, it’s damn cheap. You can buy it any minute”.
So when I got home I turned on the lathe, and here we go. My first try:
It was so much fun, that I thought – do I really need to make 17th century russian house, when all the furniture was so simple? Maybe 19th century…:))))) maybe not a house somewhere in Ural or Siberia, maybe Moscow…
Ok, ok, my first try was not perfect, so I’ll keep working on it, 17th century, yes…hm, no.
Windows are finished.
Sorry for not updating the blog for so long – I had wonderful weekend away from computer.:) Besides my holidays are over and I’m back to writing my graduate work. It will be my second diploma.
But I manage to find some time for my doll’s house. I’ve finished making window frames. It looks okay for the beginning, I haven’t painted it yet – just did some sandpapering. It will be all done after I choose the veneer for the exterior.
There will be a balcony on the second floor, oh well, I haven’t made it yet))
Bricks, vricks
We don’t look for easy ways.. These days I was reading a lot of posts about making bricks, imitating them and so on.
In the beginning I was going to use clay bricks, made of Jovi white air dry clay. I made half of the wall – but I didn’t like the result. Besides, I had to paint it later. So, I was thinking of making simple molds for the bricks from silicone rubber. Then I would try using alabaster as a brick material.
And here it is. First of all, I’ve made wooden bricks, I used balsa wood. And then I glued them to the sheet of plywood.
Window frames
It was a day of window frames. Glueing, sandpapering, but still I’ve managed to finish only half. The rest is awaiting!:)
To make it more fun I browse through Ads and signs that were made before revolution. Can’t choose the most beautiful, they all are.
Dollhouse again
After sending the present to my Mum – I can get back to my house. The first project gave me so much experience, I think I would have changed a lot when I was constructing the house, but.. it’s already done and I’ll fix it all, no doubt. (duh, I hope)
It should be very Russian, very traditional:)
First Dollhouse
I’m making it from scratch, because I want to make it in traditional russian style. I love Russian architecture, village houses, well it’s better show it:
I have a huge collection of such wonderful houses. So I decided to build a tradesman’s house. His little shop on the first floor, and couple of rooms on the second. It should be 17th century or 18th. Haven’t decided yet:) It’s easy to move from century to another – traditions in building wooden houses have remained nearly the same.
Parquetry
I was making it for the very first time, so I worried that it wouldn’t go well. Luckily I was wrong, I made few mistakes – I needed to draw the plan on the floor (forgive my English) but didn’t do it. In the end I had to make over some parts.
After first try, I go through photos of Russian palaces and houses, I wish I could make such great ornaments too!
On Sunday…
My hubby bought me Proxxon mini-lathe. I’m so happy. I just need to buy some chisels and scrapers, can’t wait to try it!
Also I bought scrollsaw, tried it in action. Works smoothly and cuts everything I need.
So, maybe this week I’ll buy some more veneer and basswood.
